Mission:
Provides increased lethality, terminal effects, ergonomics, reliability, durability and maintainability compared to legacy handgun systems.
Description:
The Modular Handgun System (MHS) pistol is a mechanically locked, short-recoil operated 9mm pistol, featuring an automatic striker pin safety lock, ambidextrous manual safety and external ambidextrous slide catch lever. The MHS provides a lightweight, operator friendly, flexible, lethal and reliable tool that provides personnel with a personal offensive/defensive capability to engage targets in the field. The MHS pistol features a polymer grip module that is available in three different sizes to accommodate different personnel hand sizes.
The MHS was designed with four internal safety mechanisms (primary sear notch, secondary sear notch, striker safety lock, and a disconnector safety mechanism) and features an external ambidextrous manual safety. This brings the total count of safety mechanisms to five for the issued US Army MHS.
The M17 MHS is the full-sized semi-automatic handgun, while the M18 MHS and the M18 General Officer (GO) handgun are its compact variants. The M17 replaces the M9; the M18 replaces the M11; and the M18 GO pistol replaces the M9 GO pistol. Both the M17 and the M18 can be equipped with either a 21-round magazine or a 17-round magazine.
