Mission:
The XM8 Carbine is a carbine variant of the M7 Rifle. After receiving Soldier feedback on the weapon system, the Army decided to advance procurement of a shorter, lighter, more mobile version of the M7.
Description:
The XM8 Carbine is a modular, piston driven, select fire, magazine fed, 6.8mm rifle. Its fully ambidextrous controls are similar to the M4A1 carbine operations with additional ergonomic features to enhance user operation, including non-reciprocating left side charging handle, collapsible buttstock, and free floating MLOK® handguard. The weapon was designed to be suppressed and comes with a quick detach suppressor optimized for the system to deliver reduction in both sound and visible flash signatures with a significant decrease in the flow of gases back to the receiver. Compared to the rifle, the carbine variant is approximately 3.5 inches shorter and over 1 pound lighter, now the same weight as an M4A1. Despite its shorter and lighter design, the carbine still exceeds its lethality requirements due in part to the performance of the 6.8x51 mm tactical ammunition.
