M224A1 60MM Lightweight Mortar System

Lightweight M3A1 Multi-role Anti-armor Anti-personnel Weapon System (MAAWS)

Mission:
The M224A1 is a lightweight 60mm mortars system that is twenty one percent (21%) lighter in weight while at the same time maintaining the same range, rates of fire and barrel life as the legacy M224 mortar weapon system.

Description:
The M224A1 60mm Lightweight Company Mortar System (LWCMS) is a smoothbore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon that delivers close-in fire support for ground troops. As the company commander's most responsive indirect fire asset, it is organic to U.S. Army and Marine Corps rifle companies, providing crucial high-explosive, smoke, and illumination fires to support infantry maneuver.

The M224A1's weight reduction was achieved by using advanced materials, including a nickel-based Inconel alloy for the cannon and aluminum and titanium in the bipod.

The M224A1 is renowned for its operational flexibility. A crew of three (squad leader/gunner, assistant gunner, and ammunition bearer) can employ it in two distinct modes:

  • Conventional Mode: Using the bipod and larger baseplate, the system is gravity-fired in a drop-fire sequence for maximum accuracy and range.
  • Handheld Mode: For rapid response, the bipod is removed, and the smaller M8 baseplate is used. The gunner supports the cannon and can fire using a manual, spring-loaded trigger. A range indicator on the handle aids in targeting during handheld operation.
