Family of Weapon Sights – Sniper (FWS-S)

Lightweight M3A1 Multi-role Anti-armor Anti-personnel Weapon System (MAAWS)

Mission:
To be used by snipers for surveillance and enhanced target engagement by allowing Soldiers to detect, recognize, and engage targets in all visibility conditions.

Description:
The Family of Weapon Sights – Sniper (FWS-S) system is mounted in-line with a sniper’s day optic. FWS-S will provide the sniper with infrared (thermal) imagery in all weather conditions, through obscurants and under all lighting conditions. The clip-on configuration allows the operator to maintain the existing day scope zero. The FWS-S will also include a wired remote to adjust focus, a wired capability to the Small Tactical Optical Rifle Mounted (STORM) micro-Laser Rangefinder.

The FWS-S System gives Soldiers the capability to see deep into the battlefield, increase surveillance and target acquisition range, and penetrate day or night obscurants. The FWS-S System provides Snipers a large format display with increased pixel density that enables accurate long-range engagements while maintaining boresight of the in-line direct view optic.

The FWS-S employs a completely passive, micro-cooled mid-wave infrared (MWIR) technology to provide a high-quality, large format image, usable with day scope magnifications from 5x to > 25x. The FWS-S has been ruggedized for use with all U.S. Army Sniper Weapon Systems. It is ideal for extended range target detection and identification, observation of environmental indicators, and is capable of tracking bullet trajectory making it the preferred Night Vision Device (NVD) for the Sniper or Reconnaissance role. The hot-swap battery capability and / or external power feature allows persistent over watch on extended missions.
